Description:

Tokyo, 1915 - 2011
38x42x31 cm
So-called butterfly stool, designed in 1954. Produced by Tendo Mokko Co. Ltd, Tokyo/ Japan, later by Vitra, Weil am Rhein/ Switzerland. Plywood with rosewood veneer, brass fittings. Traces of age.
As a student, Yanagi accompanied Charlotte Perriand on her trip to Japan from 1940 to 1942 and later maintained close contact with her. Through her he got to know the European classical modernism, which aroused his interest in seating furniture. In 1957 the stool, which combines the shape of Shinto shrine portals and the wings of a butterfly, was awarded the gold medal at the Milan Triennale.
